PlayStation 3 Launches in Japan

PlayStation 3 Launches in Japan

None

The PlayStation 3 officially debuted in Japan today. The lines were tremendously long and rowdy.

Before the stores even opened, gamers were being turned away due to long lines and a shortage of product. Only 100,000 PlayStation 3s made their way to retailers in Japan. Around 400,000 are planned to be available on release day in North America.

Sony currently has a 70% market share in Japan, Nintendo holding most of the rest. Many analysts believe it will be difficult for Sony to retain this share of the market due to the high cost of the PlayStation 3 compared with the Wii and Xbox 360. Shortages at launch are also factored into the suggestion that Microsoft and Nintendo may have a chance at taking over part of the Japanese market.
