Man Shot to Death During Arrest for PS3 Theft

Peyton Strickland, an eighteen year-old in Wilmington , North Carolina , died Friday after being shot by police intending to serve a search warrant for his home. Strickland was suspected of battering a man with a blunt object and taking two PlayStation 3s by force at the system’s launch. Another man was arrested in connection to the robbery on Friday. Both suspects and the victim were students at the University of North Carolina , Wilmington .

The police arrived at Strickland’s apartment on Friday evening to serve a search warrant and arrest him. Mike Rhoton, one of Strickland’s roommates, told the Wilmington Star News that Strickland was walking to the door unarmed to answer the knock when the police starting firing. Strickland’s German Shepherd was also shot and killed. The sheriff’s deputies had been asked to help the University police serve the warrant because of safety concerns.

County District Attorney Ben David has stated that an investigation has been launched of all the officers and deputies involved. “No one’s above the law. If there’s any criminal conduct that can be established, I’m not going to hesitate to treat them as any other defendant.”
