Nintendo, Sony won’t license AO games

In the continuing controversy around Manhunt 2, both Nintendo and Sony have stated that their consoles will not license any games with an Adults Only rating on their console, which effectively sounds the death knoll for an AO Manhunt 2.

“It’s currently our policy not to allow the playback of AO-rated content on our systems,” a Sony spokesperson stated.

Nintendo echoed Sony’s comments.  A Nintendo representative stated that “Games made for Nintendo systems enjoy a broad variety of styles, genres, and ratings. These are some of the reasons our Wii and Nintendo DS systems appeal to such a broad range of people. But as with books, television, and movies, different content is meant for different audiences. That’s why the ESRB provides ratings to help consumers understand the content of a game before they purchase it. As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems.”

In response to negative publicity surrounding the title, Chairman Strauss Zelnick had the following to say.  “The Rockstar team has come up with a game that fits squarely within the horror genre and was intended to do so. It brings a unique, formerly unheard of cinematic quality to interactive entertainment, and is also a fine piece of art,”
