Video Games Blamed for Increase in Cop Killing

Video Games Blamed for Increase in Cop Killing

None

According to recent figures, there has been an increase of 60% in the numbers of cops killed since last year.  This number is the worst in history with 54 killed this year, except for 1975 in which there were 99 killed.  In a recent Time article, a few sources speculate on the reason for this marked jump in police murders, but predictably, one has cited video games as the reason.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a law enforcement trainer and author of On Combat and On Violence goes on record saying that video games are to blame.  The following is an excerpt from his statement.

Every time [officers] take down a gang house, there’s always one thing that will always be there,” Grossman says. “It’s a video game. The video games are their newspaper, their television, their all-consuming narrative. And their video games are all cop-killer, criminal simulators.”

The other possible reasons for the surge cited in the article include less controversial subjects such as gang initiations that target police officers and an increase in available firepower for criminals.
