40GB PS3 Official for US

None

Sony has officially announced their plans to sell its 40GB PlayStation 3 in the United States , confirming the rumor that has been in existence for a while.  The 40GB model will be available in the US on November 2 and will retail for $400.  Sony has also revealed a price cut for the 80GB version, which will retail for $500, offering customers a $100 cut off of the current price.

The 40GB PlayStation 3, which lacks the backwards compatibility of earlier models, has already been introduced in European and Japanese markets and was expected to come to the US market in time for the holiday season.

In reference to the 40GB PS3’s lack of backwards compatibility, Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America stated that “We’re choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40-gigabyte model and the great software coming out…Backward compatibility is a nice secondary consideration, but it’s far from the number-one priority.”
