Mercury News Reporter Apologizes for Negative Mass Effect Review

None

Dean Takahashi, a reporter for the Mercury News, wrote a scathing review of Mass Effect , criticizing the game for a number of reasons, not the least of which was what he claimed was an unfair combat system.  He even titles his review “Mass Defect” to a number of problems, such as “tactical play” which he claimed was “horrendous.”

However, on his latest blog entry , he has to backpedal his review because, due to letters from understandably irate gamers, he realized that he hadn’t utilized his Talent points.  In his apology, Takahashi admits that “blaming the developers for my own shortcomings isn’t something a respectable and professional reviewer…should do”.

Mass Effect is a huge game with a daunting game world and most gamers agree that it lacks the proper tutorial.  Takahashi has taken responsibility for an embarrassing but somewhat understandable oversight and even stated that he would “leave the earlier review up for everyone to ridicule as they like.”  Part of the problem can obviously be attributed to Bioware, as Mass Effect didn’t do a good job of easing players into the game and teaching them the ropes, but much of Takahashi’s review focuses on what he calls a “tactical game play quagmire.”

This debacle shows us most gamers agree that Mass Effect is a great game…if you know what you’re doing.
