MGS Creator Thinks Game Violence Isn’t Real Enough

None

In a recent interview with Famitsu magazine (conducted by Jade Raymond of Assassin’s Creed fame), Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, conveyed his opinion on video game violence.  More specifically, Kojima doesn’t think that game violence has enough realism in it.

Kojima stated that if “you don’t see the pain, you can’t understand what you’ve done, and you’ll pass through battles without taking responsibility for your actions. I don’t want to ignore that. I want players to think, even if it’s just a little, about what violence and war are.”

Kojima went further to express that violence in gaming is, in his opinion, glossed over by the gameplay.  “I don’t think there are many games that tackle violence head on,” Kojima said. “When you hit someone or inflict pain, faces get disfigured for example, and I want to make games that show that sort of thing.”

Some of his viewpoint can undoubtedly be seen in some of his past games, most notably Metal Gear Solid 3, wherein you have to face the ghosts all of the individuals in the game you killed in a boss battle.  Hopefully, we can expect some of this “realism” to be actualized in MGS4, which is currently one of Sony’s biggest exclusives ( although many think it won’t stay exclusive for long ) and one of the most anticipated titles of 2008.
