Week in Review: GTA IV Release Date, New Prince of Persia, and more!

None

The week began with an announcement from EA that they are considering trying to sell their EA Trax as downloadable content. We can only hope that this content will be MP3 player friendly and not just for in-game playback.

Nintendo’s Virtual Console added two more classics to their stellar library of old-time titles. They were Adventures of Lolo 2 and Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.

The dates for the free Undertow download via Xbox LIVE were revealed. If you haven’t done so yet, get moving. You’ve only got till Saturday at midnight PST.

We also found out that Insomniac Games will in fact release Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters for the PS2. The game was successful on the PSP, but sales were hampered because of the handheld’s relatively weak market penetration. Maybe the move to the PS2 will help.

Nintendo also pulled the wool away from our eyes by revealing the identity of the mystery Super Smash Bros. Brawl developer as none other than the Japanese developer GameArts.

In more unfortunate news, Haze was delayed yet again. The graphically intense first person shooter from Ubisoft will not be available until April, 2008 at the earliest.

Fortunately, Ubisoft also announced the production of a new Prince of Persia title for us all to enjoy. Look for the mega-franchise to hit store shelves at the beginning of the 2009 fiscal year for Ubisoft which begins in April.

As we all know, the production of videogames is a big business. As such, publisher THQ had to make some huge changes in light of their 2007 fiscal report. THQ canceled the release of Frontlines: Fuel of War for the PS3, the Juiced series, and Stuntman franchise. They even went as far as to close development studio Concrete Games. Thankfully, they did all this to compete successfully and as a re-commitment to quality.

EA got into it with Fox News Channel. They weren’t pulling any punches either. In a strong letter from Jeff Brown, they called out the “Fair and Balanced” network’s inaccuracies that portrayed Mass Effect as a title marketed toward children that contained graphic sexual content. EA demonstrably disproved the assertion, but may end up losing the battle in the court of public opinion.

GTA IV is on the horizon. Rockstar announced the official date for its release as April 29, 2008.

Nintendo Wii makes a strong case for its dominance of the console market by adding the Sega Master System, Game Gear, and Mark III consoles’ games to its ever growing classic library.

And finally, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare takes the top sales spot for 2007. The game released on November 5, 2007, but still managed to outsell the competition with over seven million units in just two months.
