GDC 08 Update: New 360 SKU Rumors Persist; Return of the Red Ring?

None

In light of recent blog rumblings, product shortages, new chipsets, and a drop in January sales the gaming rumor mill insists that the 360 will be overhauled once again. To further fuel the inferno, Amazon has listed the console as “Discontinued by the manufacturer.”

This could be a simple mistake or misunderstanding, but according to Ripten “Microsoft may well be holding something back.” It looks more and more likely that Microsoft will in fact release a revamped console.

In related news, Microsoft has been plagued yet again by the appearance of the RROD. At GDC, BBC reporter Darren Waters filmed the Microsoft booth and displays giving viewers an inside look at the event. Unfortunately for Microsoft, one of the demonstration units was suffering from the Red Ring of Death. How incredibly embarrassing!

It looks like a new SKU with a cooler chipset and motherboard may be exactly what Microsoft needs to fend off a looming Sony giant.
