HD-DVD Death May Mark Significant Boost in PS3 Sales

HD-DVD Death May Mark Significant Boost in PS3 Sales

None

Toshiba has officially announced that their HD-DVD format, recorders, and players will be discontinued by the end of the month. They will continue to support customers who have purchased the product, but production will cease so that the company can focus on other endeavors. This announcement came due to the fact that Warner Bros. and the world’s largest retailer, Walmart, recently jumped ship to the Blu-Ray camp. The mounting disappointments proved to be too much for Toshiba to handle.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, the death of HD-DVD will be a boon to PS3 sales. In fact, financial analysts are pegging the Sony PS3 to see as much as a 10% increase in short-term sales. The PS3 will be purchased by many as an entry level Blu-Ray player now that the format wars are over. The long-term looks even rosier for Sony. Holiday sales of the PS3 will grow exponentially year after year. Sony’s Blu-Ray gamble looks as if it will pay off and position them very well indeed to capitalize not only in HD film sales, but also make their gaming console the industry leader.
