GDC 08 Update: Nintendo Reveals WiiWare and Wii Fit Street Dates

None

Nintendo has been busy leaving its mark on the Game Developer’s Conference by touting around its powerful trio of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Fit, and WiiWare. There’s no news concerning Brawl, but Wii Fit is scheduled to release on May 19, and the biggest news surrounds the WiiWare Channel.

The Big N has officially dated the release of WiiWare as May 12. For those of you unfamiliar with the channel, it will be an alternative repository of videogames to the Virtual Console. Instead of supporting classic content it will be a place where developers can feel free to develop new and interesting titles at very low cost. Nintendo hopes that the channel will be used as a test market where unique ideas that have gone by the wayside due to high development costs will find a home on the Wii.

According to the Nintendo press release, “watch for games from up-and-coming developers like Frontier with its fresh, enchanting platform adventure LostWinds and a new episodic game series from Telltale.” LostWinds will be the first title on WiiWare. Square Enix will also get into the mix with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King. This new entry will be a simulation title for all ages.

This is great news for Wii owners. Not only will the games be inventive, there are sure to be a number of gaming gems that will come from the marketplace. Additionally, WiiWare software is slated to be very affordably priced. Three cheers for Nintendo!
