Take-Two Interactive May Have Big Plans for BioShock & Civilization

None

At Bank of America’s Smid Cap Conference 2008, Take-Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnick explained to investors exactly why they have rejected EA’s overtures to purchase the publisher. The information included in the presentation was very informative and logical, but it was also quite boring until PowerPoint slide number 24 popped up. This slide detailed “Potential Untapped Opportunities” for the company.

The slide placed BioShock and Civilization as potential MMO franchises. The MMO market generates approximately $2.5 billion annually with the World of Warcraft franchise dominating the industry with a $1.1 billion share of total revenue. Take-Two feels as if BioShock and Civilization have the quality, clout, and pedigree to gain market share from Blizzard’s gaming juggernaut. Moreover, those kinds of numbers simply can’t be ignored by any company. If you pair this with statements from Sid Meier saying that he is toying with the idea of creating an MMO and the conjecture seems to be founded in a good deal of fact.

The news doesn’t stop there! BioShock may also be the subject of a feature-length film treatment. The chairman cited the Tomb Raider movies and Final Fantasy VII’s Direct-to-DVD release as sterling examples of major revenue producers. Stay tuned to our game news section in the coming months for firm details and confirmation.
