Link between Online Gaming and Violence Debunked?

None

According to a study conducted by Miss Jane Barnett and her colleagues at Middlesex University, people who play violent games online become relaxed and less angry after they have played. Their findings will be presented at the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference in Dublin, on Wednesday April 2, 2008. The way the press release reads it doesn’t sound as if the results were terribly convincing. However, we’ll have to wait and see what the final findings really are.

The psychologists tested a total of 292 online gamers by playing World of Warcraft. The players were made up of both male and female gamers and aged between 12 and 83 years. They were initially asked to complete a questionnaire on anger, aggression, and personality and then had to play the game again for two hours. After the game session they were asked to complete the test again. Surprisingly, the team of psychologists found that the gamers were more calm or tired after playing. However, results did vary among the various demographic groups.
