The Week in Review news piece summarizes and highlights the most important gaming related news over the past week. This weekly article, in conjunction with the Rumor Round-Up, will keep you plugged in and in-tune. Call of Duty: World at War is set to reinvent WWII shooters. As you may already know, the theater of war will switch between the Pacific and Eastern Europe. As such, players will be able to play as both U.S. Marines and Russian soldiers. Best of all, due to the Call of Duty 4 Engine, we will be treated to new weapons such as the flamethrower with amazing fire effects and killer co-op play including up to four online and local, two-player split-screen! According to Executive Producer for Battlefield, Ben Cousens, at the Paris GDC, DICE has been and is currently working on five more Battlefield titles. These titles will include another outing for consoles, three others for general PC audiences (Battlefield 3 anyone?), and another is being developed with Korean firm Neowiz specifically for the Korean market. According to an ominously named Forbes article, “PlayStation Poorhouse,” the gaming and electronics power, Sony, has accrued $3.3 Billion in losses since 2006 due to strategic pricing of the PS3. The PS3 is simply too expensive of a product to manufacture and sell in a recession racked economy. The Forbes’ figures came from Sony’s annual U.S. SEC filing on Monday. Getting ahead of E3 just a bit, Nintendo has announced four first party titles for the North American market that include Mario Super Sluggers (Wii, Aug. 25th), Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (DS, Sep. 8 th ), Kirby Super Star Ultra (DS, Sep. 29 th ), and Wario Land Shake It! (Wii, Sep. 29 th ). According to publisher Sun Denshin, Japanese WiiWare users will get a series of digital manga later this Summer. Sun Denshin has created a viewing application that will run the Sunsoft Books line. Sun Denshin will kick things off with the release of a comic created by Reiji Matsumoto (creator of the Space Battleship Yamato series). No word yet as to whether this will be a pay service or freeware. It seems like it would be awfully difficult avoid piracy distribution. Additionally, there’s speculation that the software could be turned into a Channel for other publishers to utilize. EA SPORTS announced the cover athletes for NBA LIVE 09. Keeping in the spirit of international diversity and good economic sense, EA has selected four athletes to grace the covers of various regions. The athletes include: Tony Parker (Worldwide Cover), Andrea Bargnani (Italian Cover), Pau Gasol (Spanish Cover), and Luol Deng (UK Cover). Final Fantasy: Dissidia will come to Japan this year. A new trailer was released for members of Square Enix’s Japanese fan site. For those out of the loop, Dissidia places evil doers and protagonists from the Final Fantasy universe and lumps them together in a stylistic fighter. Some of the confirmed characters are Tidus from X, Zidane from IX, Kuja from IX, Squall from VIII, and ever-popular Sephiroth. Other than being confirmed for Japanese release in 2008, there is no news as to when it will hit North American stores. Prince of Persia: The Fallen King will release for the Nintendo DS on November 19, 2008. The DS exclusive title will be a wholly separate experience, new storyline, a new playable character called the Magus, with over 50 levels of play. Click HERE for details surrounding the story!
