Australian Government Pushes For Better Game Ratings

None

The Australian government has never been too friendly towards the video game industry, and its draconian “kids-only” rating system has effectively banned many games over the years. However, several lawmakers are pushing for the government to create a new “R18” classification that would allow games to be released for mature audiences.

Under the current system, anything above an MA15 classification (the equivalent of the ESRB’s “Teen” classification) cannot be released in the region. In an interview with ABC News, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor acknowledged that Australia is “becoming the laughing stock of the developed world,” due to the fact that “we’re the only country that doesn’t have R18 classification level for video games.” Although Australia is acknowledging the problem, we don’t know how far this proposed legislation will go.
