Psychonauts: The New Meat Circus Revealed

Psychonauts: The New Meat Circus Revealed

None

This week, we reported that the Steam version of Psychonauts would be patched. One feature of that patch would be to tone down the difficulty of the notoriously frustrating Meat Circus level. My first thought was, “Great! Now I can finally beat that game without blowing a blood vessel!” My second thought was, “What, exactly, did they do to adjust the difficulty?”

By comparing my playthrough with videos of the original version I found online, I was able to ascertain that the level itself hasn’t changed much, if at all. What does seem to have changed is that in the most difficult sections (including the Tunnel of Love), falling to your death no longer costs you a life (ahem, “Astral Projection Layer”). Think of it like infinite continues, except that you still lose a life if your health runs out from getting hit. Dream Fluffs will automatically refill your health when it hits zero, so they’re highly recommended.

With perseverance (and a lot of profanity), I was able to push through the Meat Circus, but it’s still quite difficult—for example, in the stupid sequence where you chase the rabbit, you’ll still fall back through the level and have to repeat parts of it if you’re not careful. Nonetheless, if you gave up on Psychonauts at the Meat Circus and you have the Steam version, I’d highly recommend downloading the patch and giving it another go.
