Crytek Going Free-to-Play

Crytek Going Free-to-Play

None

Crytek may be best-known for its Crysis series, but the company will be going in a different direction after it finishes its current projects. According to an E3 interview with VideoGamer, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli isn’t fond of the current trend of AAA titles sold at full price, then “enhanced” with DLC and premium subscription services like Call of Duty Elite. Instead of following that industry trend, Yerli believes that his company’s future is in creating free-to-play online games.

In fact, Yerli is so certain that free-to-play is the way to go that once the company has completed its current contracts for boxed products such as Crysis 3, it will transition to making nothing but online products with an entry point of $0. This is despite the company’s plans to continue making “console quality” games with budgets between $10-$30 million.

Crytek is currently running its first such game, Warface, in Russia, and will be bringing that game to the West in the future. It’s interesting to see the company making such a drastic change in direction before even having a widespread release of its first free-to-play game. Yerli must be feeling very confident about the model.
