Capcom Announces A Street Fighter And Mega Man Crossover

Capcom Announces A Street Fighter And Mega Man Crossover

2012 is the 25 th anniversary of two of Capcom’s biggest franchises: Mega Man and Street Fighter. And while Street Fighter has gotten numerous collectible items, game bundles, tournaments, live events, and even a chess set to celebrate the event, no one seems to have shown up to Mega Man’s party. Mega Man Legends 3 was canceled, along with Mega Man Universe, and we haven’t heard word of any new Mega Man title for a very long time.

Until now.

Capcom has announced Street Fighter X Mega Man, an eight bit crossover game that sees Mega Man fighting against all of our favorite world warriors. The project was originally started by Seow “Sonic” Zong Hui, a fan who had a talent for game programming. However, Capcom has stepped in and assisted him in creating a worthwhile homage to both series.

Instead of eight robot masters, Mega Man will go up against eight fighters from the Street Fighter universe. Shown fighters include Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Blanka, Rose, Dhalsim, Rolento, and Urien. In addition, the trailer may be alluding to some interesting new mechanics. This version of Mega Man seems to be drawn from Mega Man 4, with charge shot and slide in-tact.

The best part? Street Fighter X Mega Man is absolutely free! Granted it’s PC only, but it will be available as a free download from Capcom Unity starting December 17 th .

As awesome as the game is, it still feels like Mega Man is getting a bit of a raw deal here. The fact that his anniversary is only celebrated in the context of Street Fighter seems unfair. Heck, Street Fighter even gets top billing in the game’s title, even though its essentially a Mega Man game. Have we really forgotten about the beloved blue bomber this much? These are sad times for Mega Man, but happy times for anyone who wants to partake in some free eight bit nostalgia.
