Dark Souls II And “The Phantom Pain” Revealed At VGAs

The Spike VGAs were a productive night for gaming, not only for the awards doled out, but for information on highly anticipated titles, such as The Last of Us , and the reveals of a few yet-to-be announced titles. Chief among those new games? The not-entirely-unexpected-but-still-great-to-have-it-confirmed Dark Souls II, contrasted by the ambiguous and unsettling The Phantom Pain.

The former of those has already started raising eyebrows with the assertion that it will be approaching multiplayer a bit differently, with a server system of some kind, but details have been scarce. What we do know is that it will be coming to more than just the PlayStation 3 in Japan, with Xbox 360 and PC versions planned (the previous Dark Souls was a PlayStation 3 exclusive in the Land of the Rising Sun). It will also be difficult and probably somewhat frustrating, as well as dark and sadistic.

The Phantom Pain, meanwhile, is from “Moby Dick Studio,” and may very well not be a whole new IP at all, but a new game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Analysis of the logo presents the possibility that “Metal Gear Solid V” is implied through negative space and subtle hints, and the focal character of the gorgeous trailer (which is running in real-time on current gen hardware) looks a lot like Big Boss or one of his serpentine offspring (though we never see his face). There are alternative fan theories that this is a trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, but that seems unlikely given that Ground Zeroes was already revealed with an explicit trailer and announcement. Also of note, the “hero” of the trailer, who wakes up in a hospital, is missing his left hand, having been amputated and replaced with a prosthetic hook. Liquid Snake, perhaps?

So far, Moby Dick only has a YouTube account, no Twitter or Facebook to speak of, and information is scarce aside from images and the aforementioned trailer. When will Kojima reveal more? We don’t know. But the man does love to make us guess.
