The Old Republic Expands Into The Galaxy’s Seedy Underbelly

Star Wars: The Old Republic has had a tumultuous run thus far. Hyped beyond belief, and tied to the story-telling masters at BioWare, the game was released to critical acclaim and massive sales. Within the first year, it had cracked the million-subscriber threshold.

And then it all started to slip away. Was it a lack of end-game content or the un-compelling PVP? Patches were launched that included new content and gameplay tweaks, the title went free-to-play, but it seems as though players who were drawn to it because it was a BioWare game were sated once they’d polished off their character’s story.

Perhaps the new expansion, then, is just what the game needs. The title’s first paid expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, will raise the level cap to 55 and include more single player content for those additional five levels. There will, of course, be new enemies and a new planet (Makeb).

The expansion will cost $19.99, and subscribers get it for half off. Rise of the Hutt Cartel is expected to launch in the Spring. Those who pre-order the expansion before January 7, though, will receive five days of early access.
