It appears as if 2012 was the year of the indie game. And Journey, by Thatgamecompany, cashed in on the indie game crazy by taking home the coveted Game of the Year award at D.I.C.E. And that’s not all.
Journey took home several awards including Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Casual Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay, Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design. Yes, the most awarded game of the night was an indie game that even D.I.C.E. pegged as “casual.” What does that tell you about our industry?
The indie graces do not stop there. The Walking Dead by Telltale took home awards for Downloadable Game of the Year, Adventure Game of the Year, Outstanding Character Performance, and Outstanding Achievement in Story. In fact, most of the hardcore titles went unrecognized.
