Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

We may have seen this coming, but it doesn’t make the news any less difficult; Disney is shutting down LucasArts.

The former developer will still allow other developers to license their titles, which means that Star Wars 1313 might actually be released, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.  Star Wars: First Assault, a Call of Duty-esque shooter, has been cancelled without ever being formally announced.

A Disney rep explained the situation to Game Informer: “It’s super sad. It’s a terrible day. I want to make sure everyone realizes that there still will be Star Wars games out there.”

Yes, LucasArts made a lot of Star Wars games, but they also made games like Grim Fandango and Full Throttle. Disney may be willing to license these franchises, meaning we might get a sequel or two in the future, but the price would have to be right.

Though, I would really like to see a company like Double Fine tackle a Grim Fandango sequel. Actually, I think my head just exploded from excitement.

It’s worth noting that the only game Disney is focused on is Infinity, their answer to Skylanders.
