Raven Releases Star Wars Source Code

Raven Releases Star Wars Source Code

With Disney shutting down LucasArts , all attention has turned to the future of the Star Wars gaming franchises. Projects like Star Wars 1313 and First Assault have been summarily cancelled. Some, though, are taking the blow as an opportunity to return to the past.

Raven, who developed both Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy has decided to release the source code to those two games in the wake of the closure. “We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for Lucasarts,” said the studio. “As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with.”

Both Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy feature Dark Forces hero Kyle Katarn, a mercenary-turned-Jedi Knight who cracks wise and slices Dark Jedi where they stand. Jedi Outcast in particular is a beloved first-person shooter and a terrific action game, Star Wars license or otherwise. It’ll be interesting to see what people manage with the source code.
