EA To Produce New Star Wars Games

EA To Produce New Star Wars Games

EA and Disney recently announced that they would be teaming up in order to produce a handful of new titles based on the coveted Star Wars IP. Disney will be signing a multi-year, exclusive agreement with EA, which means that EA is the only company allowed to create Star Wars games for the foreseeable future.

The agreement has EA developing Star Wars titles for the “core gaming audience” across “all interactive platforms” in “the most popular game genres.” That sort of vague wording is almost guaranteed to bury us in shovelware. Will we see a new Star Wars MMO? A new Star Wars action game? A new shooter? A new flight sim? A new dance game? Who knows.

Disney will retain the rights to create Star Wars games on any platform that isn’t dedicated to gaming. This means mobile, social, tablet, and browser-based games are still under Disney’s control and they can license the rights out to new developers as they wish.

“The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay,” EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said.

We will bring you more information on the fate of the Star Wars IP when we visit the EA booth at this year’s E3.
