All PS4 Games Will Have Remote Play On Vita

All PS4 Games Will Have Remote Play On Vita

Unlike the Wii U and, presumably, the Xbox One, the PS4 will support remote play with its portable counterpart, the PS Vita. According to a “trusted developer source” speaking to Digital Foundry, Sony has specifically asked developers to enable remote play for all PS4 titles, excluding titles that will specifically use the PS4 Eye and motion controls.

For the record, that this is Remote Play , not Cross-Platform Play . Remote Play allows the PS4 to stream a game to the PS Vita via Wi-Fi. Cross-Platform Play allows a full version of a PS4 game to be played on a PS Vita even while out of range of a Wi-Fi connection. Remote Play stores no data to the PS Vita, while Cross Play allows you to share save files between the two consoles. This turns the Vita into an a graphical powerhouse, because no graphical processing is done on the Vita’s end. In effect, the PS4 will just be streaming its video directly to the Vita’s screen.

Right now, it’s unclear how remote play will work with PS4 games that require both sets of shoulder buttons. Perhaps the Vita will produce virtual buttons using its rear touch pad. Either way, including remote play for all games will provide a huge boost to Vita sales, and will spur new innovations in multiplayer. Imagine playing a multiplayer RPG where everyone gets his or her own menu screen. You know, like Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles… but good.
