Darkspore “Abandoned” In DRM Breakdown

Darkspore “Abandoned” In DRM Breakdown

Darkspore, much like Spore before it, was a title that required a constant connection to EA’s servers, even to function in single-player. Those who’ve purchased and played the recent SimCity, also from Maxis, are all too familiar with this sort of policy, whether it’s truly in the interest of providing an enhanced experience or, in fact, a sly form of DRM.

In the case of Darkspore, though, the negative consequences of such a system have reared their heads in the worst possible way. The servers have been plagued with errors, the latest of which has been dubbed “Error 3.” Since release, there have been such bugs that have prevented players from connecting to the game’s servers, but those issues have been fairly sporadic. Only over the past month or so has Darkspore become effectively unplayable. Further, there is no fix planned. An announcement, posted to the official forums, states that “Darkspore is no longer developed.”

In response, Darkspore has been pulled from the Steam store. It is still available through Origin.
