Best Buy Cancels “Free Metro” Purchases

Best Buy Cancels “Free Metro” Purchases

Over the weekend, a page went up on Best Buy’s website offering a downloadable copy of Metro: Last Light for a single penny. A Reddit thread sent gamers clamoring to the posting, which was soon listed as “sold out” only hours before being taken down entirely. Before it was removed, though, many noticed that the page indicated that the title was supposed to be a free bonus accompanying the purchase of certain GeForce series graphics cards.

The posting had apparently been an accident and, with many who had “purchased” the title for a penny and not yet received a code, all eyes turned to Best Buy to see how they would respond to the situation.

Their answer? Cancellations and refunds. Those who successfully made it through checkout for the game have had their solitary cent returned alongside cancellation e-mails. While they are certainly disappointed, it isn’t that they’ve lost something so much as failed to obtain something for free, and given that the Metro codes attached to the penny purchases were probably provided by the developer expressly as part of the video card promotion, it makes sense that Best Buy would choose to protect its inventory rather than take the more popular PR stance.
