Eiji Aonuma Is Tired Of The Current Zelda Formula

“It’s not that anyone is telling me we have to change the formula. I want to change it. I’m kind of getting tired of it.”

These are the words of Eiji Aonuma, the man who’s been overseeing the Zelda franchise for the past decade, while speaking to the LA Times.

“If I’m getting tired of it,” he continued, “then I’m sure other people are getting tired of it. There is an essential ‘Zelda’ I feel we need to stay true to. We are still testing things, exploring our options. We haven’t landed anywhere at this point. We’re still seeing what we can do.”

While Zelda fans are about to get a remake ( Windwaker HD) and a direct sequel ( A Link Between Worlds ), there’s still that Wii U project that we know very little about. It’s a project that Aonuma hopes can completely reimagine the entire franchise.

While Zelda fans may be quick to point out that they’ve been hearing this kind of talk since Twilight Princess , there’s one key difference between the Wii U and Wii/GameCube games: this Zelda will be in HD. Perhaps a high-definition Hyrule will bring the change Aonuma wants.
