Strider Hiryu Is Back

Strider Hiryu Is Back

The original arcade version of Strider is still one of the best side-scrolling action games ever released. It made the sci-fi/ninja crossover work in a big way, with unique control mechanics and fast-paced action. It only ever had one official sequel, Strider 2, which was released on the original PlayStation and doubled up on the speed of the action. Plus it provided an experience halfway between a platformer and a bullet hell shooter.

Now, according to Capcom, it’s time for a new Strider game. Revealed at San Diego Comic-Con with a flashy announcement trailer, which appears to be all gameplay, this Strider looks like it will be a darker, grungier experience. And, though the visuals are polygonal, the gameplay looks to be entirely confined to two dimensions. It’s a bit sad to see the bright colors of previous Strider games go, and the pace of the game seems to have been slowed down (though the screen remains hectic), but it’s really just exciting to see something new being done with the Strider property after so long.

Strider will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, PC, and (possibly) Wii U in early 2014.

A Wii U version, according to Double Helix, will require significant player demand.
