Microsoft Optimizes Xbox One By Boosting GPU And Clock Speed

Microsoft is currently taking steps to optimize their upcoming console, the Xbox One. If you ever wondered why game consoles with low specs are able to produce visuals comparable to thousand dollar high-end PCs, this is why.

Chief product officer Marc Witten gave an example of this process in an interview with Polygon. “You sort of start with the base [DirectX] driver, then you take out all parts that don’t look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really, really, optimizes that experience,” Whitten said. “And almost all of our content partners have really picked it up now, and it’s really, I think, made a really nice improvement. It’s really cool.”

In addition to overhauling the graphics software, Microsoft has managed to increase the clock speed of the console’s GPU from 800 MHz to 853 MHz. That might not seem like a lot, but you’d be surprised how much overclocking helps overall speed—if they can prevent it from overheating, that is.

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will share similar specs when they come out in November this year. It will be small tweaks like this that really set both systems apart.
