Bungie States Destiny Is not an MMO…Sort Of…

As they say, there’s no such thing as bad press. With speculation running rampant as to exactly what gamers will experience with Bungie’s upcoming Destiny release, the developer recently addressed the comparisons people have made between their title and an MMO.

During the weekly update, when asked if they ever get tired of people calling Destiny an MMO, Bungie responded by saying,  “Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it’s not an MMO? Debate about this game is always fun, and we welcome it….Like an MMO, our game will compel you to explore. You’ll embody a character that evolves on that journey. Unlike an MMO, the entire experience is built around heart-pounding action that you’ll see through the eyes of your hero.”

That statement essentially both confirms and denies the rumors, by stating it does draw elements from popular MMOs, but certain gameplay mechanics prevent it from truly falling into that category. Besides, most expect it to be much more of a spiritual successor to Halo than anything else, even if the gameplay elements are vastly different.

Bungie also touts the fun that can be had in just working on a game like Destiny (during something as mundane as a lunch break), stating that “one engineer confessed to running like a scared child as Hive reinforcements beneath the Moon reversed the good fortune of his Fireteam. Another engineer bragged about standing his ground, and fighting off aliens with an ancient sword claimed from the grotto.”

The release date for Destiny is still unconfirmed .
