Gaikai Streaming Coming to PS4 Later Next Year

Gaikai Streaming Coming to PS4 Later Next Year

PS4 early adopters are waiting patiently for Sony to allow them to stream older titles to their console. This is the only sort of backward compatibility that the system will have, and it will make use of Sony’s Gaikai platform, Unfortunately, we will have to wait a bit longer to see the technology fully implimented. According to an interview that Eurogamer had with Sony Computer Entertainment CEO, Andrew House, we likely won’t see any Gaikai functionality hitting the console in North American until third quarter 2014. What’s even worse, other territories will have to wait until 2015 to see any of this functionality.

“But what’s important is to understand the full scope of what we’re trying to achieve and why we felt the Gaikai acquisition was important,” said House. “Our goal is to  be able to have a new form of game distribution streamed from the server side, initially to PS4 consoles then gradually moving that out to Vita.”

So the Vita too will be able to play past PlayStation titles, even including PS3 titles. Unfortunately Sony hasn’t yet figured out the purchasing mechanism for gaining streaming access. It’s possible that Sony will consider titles you already own digitally, or even on disk. However, it’s also possible that you will have to buy them all again. Sony doesn’t know much more than we do, as they are still forming their streaming policies. Let’s hope that our old PS3 libraries actually do count for something.
