An image has been circulating the net recently, touting a way to “unlock” Xbox One backwards compatibility. The image claims the Xbox One has always been able to play Xbox 360 games, but has simply locked this off to the public for a later patch. It claims that all you have to do is use the dev console unlock code and change up your sandbox ID code.
Unfortunately, this image is a complete hoax. While the first few steps will, in fact, unlock devkit mode and allow you to input a sandbox ID, the sandbox ID is a fake. When an improper sandbox ID is entered into an Xbox One devkit, it gets caught in a boot loop. As a result, anyone who has been using this “fix” has actually been bricking their Xbox One console. Then, of course, you’d have to bring it to an official Microsoft retailer in order to be fixed, but good luck getting them to after you’ve fiddled with your devkit features. You may just have to go in and format the harddrive yourself, but that involves opening up your Xbox One and will totally void your warranty.
In short, don’t fall for this scam. You will only cost yourself a bunch of money. Besides, if you fell for it you probably already have a device that plays Xbox 360 games just fine. It’s called an Xbox 360. Hook it up to your Xbox One’s HDMI input if you really want them all in one place.
