Inside “Road Not Taken” for the PS4

As we’ve seen in recent years and continue to witness moving forward in the next-gen, games aren’t just about racing, sports or FPS fun anymore. Take one look at Road Not Taken and it’s glaringly obvious.

Daniel Cook (who is Chief Creative Officer at Spry Fox) touts the innovations and uniqueness of the game in a recent post on the PlayStation.Blog. “How might a roguelike look… if it featured a thinker and explorer, instead of a traditional warrior? If being clever was more important than being strong? That’s a design challenge we’ve attempted to tackle with Road Not Taken….Trees, boulders, bears — they all float at your command. But you need to be careful; whenever you carry things, it costs you stamina. If you run out of stamina, you collapse face-first into the snow. No checkpoints, no reloads. It’s over.” He says.

One of the things that makes Road Not Taken a challenge is exactly that: the challenge. Cook describes scenarios where gamers will happen upon certain obstacles or pitfalls they won’t be able to overcome at first. With time and practice, he feels they will be. Granted, this sounds like a beginners trap, but Road Not Taken hopes to have an addictive quality that will keep gamers from getting too frustrated and see them coming back to pick up their controllers again and again.
