You know those sci-fi thrillers that feature vaults and PCs locked by an iris scan? Well now you can have your own little piece of futuristic PC security right in your own home. Eyelock has recently developed the Myris, a USB Iris Scanner.
The device actually works, which is really the most impressive thing about it. Setting it up is a bit of a hassle though. You will be asked to scan your eye multiple times from multiple different distances so that the device can get a good readout of your particular iris pattern. On the other hand, this means that subsequent scans are more likely to succeed as it can tell your iris shape from multiple differences. Scans do appear to take 15 seconds though, so practice keeping your eye open and staring directly at a laser. At least it’s less of a hassle than remembering that one unique password you made with the 20 characters, capitals, symbols, and numbers. Something like, XxAwesomeMagnet#69!xX
The Myris is set to arrive sometime this spring and will likely retail for under $300 dollars. The real promise of the Myris is the ability to build the technology directly into high powered professional laptops which could happen in the near future.
