Disney Cancels Star Wars 1313

Disney Cancels Star Wars 1313

After the purchase of Lucas Arts by Disney, the fate of the much anticipated Star Wars 1313 was left hanging in the balance. After several months of ambiguity surrounding the title, Disney has come out and announced that any production or development on the title has ceased.

Documented officially in a form filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Star Wars 1313 was abandoned just before Christmas on December 23, 2013. Stated in the document, the title was, “ abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.” According to The Escapist , this ties into the fact that neither Disney or EA, who bought over the Star Wars IP as part of its exclusive agreement with Disney, renewed Star War 1313’s trademark, which spelled an end to the title’s chance of hitting the shelves, even if it was well into its development.

With EA already having DICE’s Star Wars: Battlefront and BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic under its belt, you’d think the company would capitalize on such a strong franchise name with Star Wars 1313 . However, since 1313’s trademark wasn’t renewed at all, it’s likely the title wasn’t in EA’s playing cards, which is a shame, really.

Star Wars 1313 was going to be a title where you’d take on the perspective of a bounty hunter, and that perspective was going to be a young Boba Fett, according to the 15 minute demo IGN got their hands on last September. A fitting title, considering his father, Jango Fett, was the star of 2002’s Bounty Hunter , which was released on the GameCube and PlayStation 2. After 1313’s cancellation, however, this cute coincidence will likely never come to fruition.

The next big Star Wars game to look forward to is DICE’s Star Wars: Battlefront , which is slated to drop sometime in 2015. Let’s hope the multiplayer of that game isn’t riddled with bugs upon release.
