Disney Interactive Will Be Laying Off Hundreds

Disney Interactive Will Be Laying Off Hundreds

Can you think of a good Disney game to come out in the past few years? Probably not… except for maybe Epic Mickey if you were into bad camera controls and spotty plaforming. This is why Disney’s games division will be laying of “several hundred people” beginning next week. The cuts are expected to mostly hit social gaming studio Playdom which Disney bought back in 2010. Social gaming on platforms like Facebook has been falling off these past few years, so cuts in the social gaming sector seem natural, of course this won’t make the people who are being laid off feel any better. Disney’s gaming division currently employs about 3,000 people.

OK, we know that we started this article with the whole “think of a good Disney game” joke, but in reality Disney is doing ok. Disney Infinity has had a magnificent launch and has sold more than three million starter packs so far. It’s only going to do better when Marvel and Star Wars packs come out in the near future. In fact, Disney Interactive posted a profit last quarter. This makes you wonder why Disney would choose now, of all times, to announce layoffs.
