Sony Expanding PlayStation Now Beta

Sony Expanding PlayStation Now Beta

Sony has decided to expand their PlayStation Now beta, pushing the boundary of the cloud-gaming service. They have just sent out a new wave of beta invitations, and if you made the cut you should be able to find your invite in your e-mail. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can head on over to the official PlayStation Now beta site and sign up.

Expanding the beta is actually a very good idea. Remember that cloud gaming services like this run the game on a remote server and only transfer the video feed and your user inputs back and forth. For a couple people, it’s easy to get latency down to console comparison level. But what about when the servers come under a heavy load? Sure the service can likely handle a couple hundred thousand people, but remember, several million PS4’s have been sold, and when PlayStation Now expands to include almost all of the PlayStation back library, there will be lots of gamers on the PlayStation Now servers at any given time. So it’s important for Sony to stress test this service now, because there is nothing that will kill it faster than servers that cannot handle the load.
