Performance Between Xbox One and PS4 is “getting comparable,” Says Oddworld Dev

During an interview with XboxAchievements , Lorne Lanning, the co-founder of Oddworld Inhabitants, the developer of the Oddworld series, discussed that the performance gap between Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 was noticeable during the early releases for both consoles, but the difference between the two is quickly shortening.

So I would say, months ago, there was a wider gap, ” Lanning told XboxAchievements . “ Part of it was the development systems. We’re hearing and seeing that that curve is getting closer,” he said. “I think at the end of the day when people maximize both systems, they’re each powerful enough[…] They’re in that class of when you watch the basketball, you’re going to be like, ‘Is that TV? Or is that a game?’

Lanning went on to discuss that the reason why the distance is closing is because of improved developer toolsets.

I think they’ve been improving the toolset really fast, improving the development environment and shaving that curve down… I think they’re getting comparable.

You know, if you want to run at 1080p, Battlefield , I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to tax the system at that higher end, but I’m sure in couple of years it won’t be a problem. We’re early.

I have to say, the PlayStation 4 has been pretty amazing and that’s where we’ve been spending a lot of our time, ” he continued. “ But I don’t see a huge gap like there used to be. There used to be a significant gap.

Lanning believes that Oddworld Inhabitants’ next installment to the series, a full remake of Oddworld: New ‘n Tasty for the PlayStation 4, won’t have any noticeable differences in performance should the developer work on an Xbox One version.

For us, we aren’t taxing it that heavy, like I say it’s not Battlefield,” he said. “ For us, we don’t really see that we’ll have performance problems on either and we’ll be able to get what we want, with very dynamic looking lighting, particle effects, etc.

It’s been recently rumored that the PlayStation 4 will receive backwards compatibility for PlayStation One and PlayStation 2 titles. PlayStation 4 console sales have also risen in the UK by 106 percent following the launch of InFAMOUS: Second Son , topping the Xbox One’s console sales in the UK of 96 percent following Titanfall . Before the release of InFAMOUS: Second Son , the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 for four weeks in a row.
