Firaxis Announces Civilization: Beyond Earth

Firaxis Announces Civilization: Beyond Earth

The newest game in the Civilization franchise is going to be sci-fi themed. Entitled Civilization: Beyond Earth , the game takes place in the future, after we have milked our planet dry. The pyramids have sunk, fog has clouded the sky, and we are all hyper crowded into massive cities. It takes place after a “great mistake” which sends humanity into a 200 year futuristic Dark Age. Civilization itself has become shattered, as people simply struggle to survive. So instead, we decide to take to the stars, to colonize other planets.

That’s where the whole Civilization angle comes into play. We will not be starting Civilization from scratch this time around. Instead, we will be rebuilding civilization. Humanity will be landing on brand new uninhabited planets, terraforming them, and trying to build up cities anew with limited resources.

But living on other planets won’t be easy. Some may not even have breathable atmosphere! How do you deal with these problems as a futuristic civilization? Do you encase your people in massive domes, exposing them to tragedy if your oxygen systems fail? Do you genetically engineer your population to breathe the atmosphere more easily, or perhaps make them part plant in order to photosynthesize? Do you augment all your population with cybernetics, removing their need to breathe all together? Do you simply terraform the planet until you can step outside safely? These are the types of decisions you will make in this brand new civ game.
