Report Shows 37 Percent of Steam Games Go Unplayed

Steam has an amazing business model. Somehow they get people to spend money on games and then never even play them. According to a recent study by Ars Technica, around 37 percent of all games purchased on steam never get played. Yes, 37 percent! Before you think that is outlandish check out your own library and see what percentage of your own Steam games you haven’t played. I’m a professional game reviewer and I’ve only played …56% of my Steam library. Wow… (granted Steam counted a lot of individual episodes of Telltale games as a separate game).

There are several reasons why this could have happened. Humble bundles and Steam sales tend to give you a lot of games for a very cheap price. However, these games usually come in bundle packs which many times have games that users aren’t at all interested in, but pick up anyway because the price is right.

Here’s an example of the disparity between owning and actually playing a game. 12.77 million gamers own Half-Life 2: Lost coast . However, only 2.1 million players have ever actually played the game on steam. That’s a whopping 10.7 million people who have spent money on a game but never played it once.
