Sony Announces 4K Media Player

On Tuesday, April 15, Sony Electronics detailed in a press release the pricing and availability of its new 4K–Ultra HD–resolution products, and unveiled the new 4K media player. The new content and hardware is said to offer consumers more 4K choices than ever.

We continue to be the only company that offers a complete line-up of consumer 4K products, including TVs, front projectors, cameras and camcorders, while also leading the industry in providing 4K content, ” said Mike Fasulo, president at Sony Electronics. “ Sony’s new 4K Ultra HD TVs, 4K media player and new 4K content offerings continue to strengthen our growing ecosystem. We strongly believe 4K is the future for entertainment and we remain committed to leading the 4K movement, from lens to living room, in a way that only a company like Sony can.

The 4K Ultra HD Media Player, coined as the “FMP-X10”, is touted to have the largest collection of over 200 titles of 4K feature movies and TV episodes thanks to Video Unlimited 4K. Using the Media Player will allow you to download hundreds of titles from Video Unlimited, stream 4K content from Netflix, and store the latest 4K has to offer in one box and playback everything on their 4K Ultra HD TV.

The Media Player will come with built-in 1Tb storage, and it also supports TRILUMINOS Color for deep and rich colors on your TV. The box is touted to be the ideal device for those of you who are looking to upgrade your current 4K TVs to support the latest 4K hardware technology has to offer. The 4K Ultra HD Media Player is said to launch this summer.

Sony officially announced today, April 17, that it’ll be selling its shares in Square Enix within the coming days. Sony Online Entertainment recently announced its own post-apocalyptic zombie MMO, titled H1Z1 , which will be available to play in full sometime “soon.” The free-to-play title will launch on PC first, and then later on PlayStation 4. It will appear on Steam’s Early Access in about four to six weeks for about $20.

It was recently announced that Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Jack Tretton will be stepping down from his position of CEO at the end of March, ending his 20-year career at the company.

Sony also won’t be using Google’s recently announced Google Wear for its wearable products, it will be instead sticking with its own version of an Android-based operating system, due to the company already having invested in that particular route.
