Star Wars: Episode VII Cast Announced; The Old Crew Returns

Announced at the tail-end of last month, on Tuesday, April 29, the cast for the upcoming first addition of the new Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VII , was officially revealed .

The familiar crew of the original trilogy will be making its return in the new film, as they and a few others gathered at Pinewood Studios in London for a read-through of the film’s script with J.J. Abrams (the film’s director, co-writer and co-producer). Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will be returning as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, C-3PO, Chewbacca and R2-D2 respectively.

Along with the original crew, actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow will also be making an appearance in Episode VII , but their respective roles have yet to be revealed.

We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII , ” expressed J.J. Abrams in the announcement. “ It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.

LucasFilm confirmed on Friday, April 25 that all future Star Wars content will be the new canon to the franchise. With this announcement, it’d be safe to assume that upcoming videogame titles such as DICE’s Star Wars: Battlefront and Visceral Games’ unnamed Star Wars project will also be part of this canon. The writer and creative director of the Uncharted series, Amy Hennig, recently joined Visceral Games to work on said unnamed Star Wars project. While some elements may be included from Star Wars’ Expanded Universe, it’s been interpreted that the majority of it will be disregarded in favor of the new canon. Star Wars: Episode VII will also be part of this new canon by assumption.

Recently, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson made it clear that the publisher’s upcoming Star Wars titles will not be based directly on the new Star Wars movie trilogy from Disney. Instead, the publisher will be taking a page from the Batman: Arkham series , where it will take Star Wars back to the roots of its IP and build up from there.

Principal photography began for Star Wars: Episode VII on Tuesday, March 18. The film is slated to release in theatres worldwide on December 18, 2015 .
