Dropping the Kinect: The End to Resolutiongate?

Dropping the Kinect: The End to Resolutiongate?

So the big news is that Microsoft will be seeing an Xbox One without the Kinect attachement soon. This Kinect-less Xbox will cost $100 less than the original bundle with the Kinect. The Kinect itself will be sold in standalone packs, for about $100 bucks. So nothing really is changing much, just the way we purchase our consoles…

Or is it? Yusuf Mehdi, corporate Vice President for devices and studios over at Microsoft said in an interview to Polygon, that the console allocates a certain amount of CPU for the Kinect and the game. Since the Kinect is always on, a part of the system has to always be listening. However, now that the system can operate without the Kinect, that may change. “We are in discussions with our game publishers about what we might do in this space and we will have more to talk about soon,” he said.

One of the biggest scandals involving the Xbox One was resolution gate, which showed that many games did not play in full 1080p on an Xbox One console. This was because it was hard to allocate the Xbox One’s memory and processor, harder than it was for the PS4 at least. This newly recovered CPU space may be the key to allowing games to more easily utilize all that the Xbox One has to offer.
