Porting The Last of Us Has Been “Hell”

Porting The Last of Us Has Been “Hell”

I hope PlayStation 4 owners appreciate the upcoming remaster of The Last of Us because apparently it’s proved challenging for Naughty Dog. Creative Director Neil Druckman recently spoke to Edge Magazine about the difficulties surrounding the port. To give you an idea of the challenges the team faced, Druckman called the porting process “hell.”

Druckman described how the team is constantly comparing the two versions of the game to make sure they didn’t create new mistakes. “I can’t describe how difficult a task that is,” said Druckmann. “And once it’s running well, you’re running the [versions] side by side to make sure you didn’t screw something up in the process, like physics being slightly off, which throws the game off, or lighting being shifted and all of a sudden it’s a drastically different look.”

One takeaway is that Druckman and his team have spared no expense trying to create a faithful port. This also means the team has had practice developing for the PlayStation 4, which will hopefully ease the transition for Naughty Dog when it decides to create original games for the system.
