Patch Saves Halo: Combat Evolved on PC from GameSpy Shutdown

With the online / multiplayer services provided by GameSpy soon to be shut down, a fair number of fans of old titles are in a bit of a panic due to there currently being no back-up plan to a fair portion of them.

Even Electronic Arts is keeping track of all its games that’ll be affected by the GameSpy closure; titles like Crysis , Battlefield 2 and some Command & Conquer games will have their respective multiplayer modes become inert once the service closes.

Luckily, for all you original Halo fans out there, in an act of community initiative and a little helping hand from none other than the game’s original developer, Bungie, a patch has been released that will ensure that the game’s online capabilities will still function after the GameSpy shutdown.

A small group has been quietly preparing for the shutdown of the GameSpy Master Server (which provides the list of Halo servers) and they are finally ready to discuss their work, ” wrote community member Technut on the Halo Fixes forum , explaining the story of trying to find a workaround. “ The group consists of Roger Wolfson aka Sawnose (of Bungie), Btcc22, Kornman00 and myself, Technut.

As a result of their work, ” Technut continued, “ especially Btcc22 and Roger, Bungie will be releasing version 1.0.10 of Halo PC and Halo CE soon, which will include the fix for the Lobby!

Bungie later officially released the 1.0.10 patch for Halo on PC on Thursday, May 15. If you’ve not manually updated, you may have received an automatic update on Monday, May 19. You can download the patch you need via the Halo Fixes forum , where you’ll also find further details as to what to expect upon installing the patch.

Technut’s full story on how the patch came around can be read via the source link below.

It has been reported that an entire collection of all the previous games from the main series (being Halo: Combat Evolved through to Halo 4 ) will be receiving an HD remastering in the form of what has been dubbed as the Halo: The Master Chief Collection , which has also strengthened the Halo 2 Anniversary rumor .

The purpose of the collection is said to refresh the memories of Halo fans young and old ahead of release for the recently announced Halo 5: Guardians .
