Microsoft Confirms Kinect’s Removal Improves Xbox One SDK

Microsoft Confirms Kinect’s Removal Improves Xbox One SDK

As reported by Eurogamer on Thursday, June 5, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One’s software development kit has received a boost in performance due to the Kinect being removed from the current-gen console’s package.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson who confirmed this to Eurogamer, the additional computing resources freed by the lack of the Kinect peripheral has granted the Xbox One’s SDK up to 10 percent of additional GPU power.

Yes, the additional resources allow access to up to 10 per cent additional GPU performance, ” the spokesperson told Eurogamer . We’re committed to giving developers new tools and flexibility to make their Xbox One games even better by giving them the option to use the GPU reserve in whatever way is best for them and their games.

However, as Microsoft later confirmed, the removal of the Kinect “ will not impact the performance of Xbox One. ” Regular consumers won’t see the Xbox One perform any better, but the console’s SDK will have been improved.

In fact, all that the Kinect’s removal has done is provide developers will a little bit more elbow room to utilize the console’s extra GPU power to better improve their games however they see fit–meaning that they could use the extra juice to make their games more graphically pretty if so desired.

For consumers, simply unplugging Kinect will not impact the performance of Xbox One, ” Microsoft explained in a statement to Eurogamer. ” The June SDK released to developers gives them access to additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions. Accessing the additional GPU resources is done by the developer, and how developers choose to access the extra GPU performance for their games is up to them.

For titles that ship in the future, if a developer has taken advantage of this SDK change they may access this additional GPU resource, ” Microsoft continued. “ We have started working with a number of developers on how they can best take advantage of these changes, and we’ll have more to share in the future.
