Xbox One's “Cloud” Servers are Just Dedicated Servers

In a small discussion with Eurogamer during E3 last week, Microsoft’s corporate vice president Phil Harrison clarified on the company’s reference to “the Cloud”.

Harrison was broached about Microsoft's Cloud servers when there was no mention of the Cloud throughout the company’s press conference at this year’s E3. As it turns out, at least in the short-term, Microsoft’s “Cloud” is actually just dedicated servers.

"You picked up on exactly that," Harrison told Eurogamer last week, referring to there being no mention of the Cloud during the company’s conference. "Xbox Live is the service. Dedicated servers is the benefit. That is the reason why these games are going to be better, why the experience for multiplayer is going to be better.

And we're being clear, hopefully around all of the games that will take advantage of it, whether it is a game like Forza Horizon 2, or whether it's Halo: The Master Chief Collection, particularly the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta,” Harrison added.

So, for now, it seems that the Xbox One’s upcoming titles will be taking advantage of dedicated servers for their respective multiplayers until online functionalities can truly be offloaded into the Cloud. Be sure to check out Eurogamer’s full article on the matter via the source link below.
