Microsoft Plans to “Win that Core Gamer,” says Head of Xbox

In a video interview with Bloomberg during this year’s E3, Microsoft’s head of Xbox Phil Spencer revealed that the company’s plan for its current-gen consoles–the Xbox One–is to “ try to win that core gamer.

When asked if Spencer could contextualise what kind of role the core gamer and enthusiast play in continuing the life of the Xbox One in terms of sales and general statistics, Spencer stated that the such users are “ critical ” to the console. According to Spencer, this is because the core gamer has been the most vocal audience of the Xbox One.

Those early adopters I think in any consumer category are the people that are giving you feedback on the things you’re going to try to do, ” Spencer told Bloomberg.

Every year, we’re going to try to win that core gamer. Not just because it’s a great audience, it’s a consumptive audience, but also somebody that’s going to give you feedback on the new things you’re doing, ” Spencer added. A lot of the new things actually impact the broader audience over time. Winning that core gamer year after year is a focus of mine as Head of Xbox.
