Witcher 3 Dev will only Charge Large DLC Packs, Smaller ones will be Free

In an interview with Kotaku on during E3 a couple of weeks ago, CD Projekt co-founder and CEO Marcin Iwiński took a moment to explain why he feels DLC shouldn’t be complicated and player-unfriendly.

Believing DLC shouldn’t be about an ongoing service towards a particular game, Iwiński explained how the developer will be handling DLC in regards to the upcoming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt .

When we make a game and ask people to pay money for it, we sign a long-term agreement with them, ” he said. ” We owe them. They paid us money, whether it was a full-price purchase or a bit later, we owe them support of our game. So people will get a lot of support with Witcher 3 , and we’re preparing some cool stuff.

Iwiński then continued on to say that CD project won’t charge for small add-ons, such as a new sword or some new costume options. However, when it comes to the larger add-ons, such as expansion packs, Iwiński explained that the developer would probably charge for those.

First and foremost, I think the word ‘DLC’ has been extremely devalued, ” he continued. ” Any additional content is called DLC, whether it’s one sword or some costume options or a full expansion pack. I really look at it differently. For me DLC is the smaller bits and pieces, and we will never charge for those things.

However, ” he added, “ if we do a big adventure—say, 15 or 20 hours long, a very high production value story extension to the game—then we will probably charge for that.
